Our Graduate Programme

Relationship Banking

What does Relationship Banking do?

8Relationship Banking manages  high value customers within the Commercial and Rural markets. The Commercial Banking Segment and Operations & Risk are the two major teams within Relationship Banking that will be your home for the next 2 years. The Commercial Segment team develops strategy to enhance and grow ASB’s share of this valuable market. The Operations & Risk team provides oversight, ensures compliance, implements risk and process changes, and manages the operational and credit risk framework for the division.

What will I do on the Relationship Banking programme?

The focus will be to develop your analytical skills and learn about the intricacies of the Commercial segment; perform data analysis to help with strategy implementation; work with Marketing to deliver targeted communications to the Commercial market (including Maori Banking); and work with the frontline to develop tools, campaigns and initiatives to help grow target segments. In addition, you will learn about the operational risk management framework; what risks eventuate in our business units; how risk is mitigated; investigate risk incidents; and develop new processes and implement these changes in the wider business unit.

You will also spend three months in a customer-facing business unit getting to know our Customers, Colleagues and Communities + three months in a Risk function in the Bank.

Analytics – Credit Risk Analytics and Customer Analytics & Pricing

What does Customer Analytics & Pricing do?

ASB officesCustomer Analytics & Pricing (CAP) is divided into three core functions, plus a Business Intelligence team, which liaises with our internal partners in Technology.  The analytics journey starts with Customer and Marketing Analytics to understand product, customers, and needs, then moves to Pricing to determine product or offer pricing, then to Reporting & Analytics for on-going measurement.

What does Credit Risk Analytics do?

Credit Risk Management’s job is to assess the financial health of our customers and extend credit accordingly. We do this by employing our own models, which rank potential and existing customers according to risk. Credit Risk Management is split into four main areas: Retail Analytics, Corporate Analytics, Credit Information and Credit Framework.

What will I do on the Analytics programme?

Working in the Credit Risk Analytics and Customer Analytics & Pricing teams, you will develop core analytical, database and reporting skills needed in a number of analytical industries.

In the Credit Risk Analytics team, you’ll gain end to end exposure of retail credit risk management from origination, account management, collections and recoveries. You’ll analyse portfolio quality, learn how the bank uses scorecards and statistics to improve decisioning, and assist in researching and implementing new credit risk initiatives. You will also be trained to use key tools including forecasting, provision and Basel II models.

In the Customer Analytics & Pricing team, you’ll learn how the Bank’s value chain fits together from distribution channels through operations, technology, finance, treasury, marketing and product management. You’ll get to put a business spin on your technical expertise by working right alongside business experts and get experience in and exposure across a large chunk of ASB’s products.

You will also spend three months in a customer-facing business unit (for example, in our one of our branches) getting to know our Customers, Colleagues and Communities + three months in a Risk function in the Bank.
