Our Graduate Programmes
Products, Innovation & Marketing
What does Brand & Marketing do?
The Brand & Marketing team is responsible for making sure ASB's marketing campaigns deliver on bank-wide strategic and business objectives. Our job is to make sure that the things that make ASB special and different from other banks are conveyed to our customers through every communication we have with them. Part of this is making sure our campaigns and collateral have a consistent look, feel and voice, and working on strategies that will make ASB stand out from the crowd.
What does Product Management do?
Product Management is responsible for both the strategic direction and tactical initiatives for products such as transaction and savings accounts, term deposits, credit cards and home loans. This starts right from coming up with the idea to leading the development and implementation of the products and services - for example, the launch of “Save the Change” www.asb.co.nz/savethechange. We manage the product pricing and profitability, setting interest rates for products such as home loans and term deposits. We work with Brand and Marketing to deliver campaigns that help our products grow. We also work with channels such as online, contact centres and branches to ensure the sales and service delivery of our products deliver the best solutions for customers. Product Managers need to have a high level of analytical skills to interpret customer needs, research market trends and product profitability as well as being good stakeholder managers to work with colleagues across the organisation to facilitate product success. This means you gain great exposure to the fundamentals of successful and profitable product management as well as exposure to a wide variety of departments across ASB.
What does Innovation do?
The Innovation team focuses on designing solutions that are customer-centric using in-depth qualitative research as a primary method of exploring customers' needs and drivers. When customers are at the heart of the design process, the solutions tend to drive more profitable growth. The Innovation team is involved in designing user-centric solutions for issues across ASB.
What will I do on the Products, Innovation & Marketing programme?
Working across several divisions in the Bank, you will gain experience in product management, innovation and brand & marketing. These rotations will give you exposure to a wide variety of departments, as our roles require us to work very closely with our colleagues across the Bank. You could work on product development projects, campaigns, initiatives to improve customer service experience and pricing changes.
Some recent examples of product & campaign launches and innovations are:
- The recent ASB brand relaunch "Creating Futures"
- The launch of ASB's virtual branch on Facebook (a world first)
- HomePlus
- Save the Change
You will build great networks across the bank, learn stakeholder management skills, develop your analytical and project management skills and learn about developing profitable propositions that meet customer needs.
You will also spend three months in a customer-facing business unit (for example, in our one of our branches) + three months in a Risk function in the Bank.

Branch Banking
What does Branch Banking do?
Branch Banking is at the front line of the distribution of ASB’s business. This is where we help our customers with their hopes and dreams and provide them with the appropriate products and services so they can bring their dreams to reality. In Branch Banking, our staff drive our sales and service culture, and this is key to our success. We are continually stretching, driving and developing our staff so that they can become the best in their role that they can be. We are a large team, who love to set new records of achievement and every week we strive together to achieve greater results and set new benchmarks.
What will I do on the Branch Banking programme?
During the programme, you will get to experience different front line roles in the branch. Exposed to different concepts and fully immersed in the ASB culture, no two days will be the same. You will have a lot of contact with customers, dealing with their queries and making referrals, all while working in a busy and vibrant team environment. Ultimately, you will progress to a people leader role, responsible for front line staff in the branch and responsible for driving business goals and coaching the staff to achieve world-class goals.
You will also have a couple of shorter rotations outside of Branch Banking, including one three-month stint in a Risk function in the Bank.

ASB Institutional
What does ASB Institutional do?
ASB Institutional is responsible for the provision of products and services to ASB's major corporate and government clients to optimise the client's capital structure and related financial flows. The Client Relationship team is the primary face to the market for all complex financing and advisory functions. The Markets team is responsible for all of the activities associated with financial markets, and works closely with Treasury to manage ASB's overall positions in these markets on a day-to-day basis. ASB Institutional also incorporates the Transaction Banking Solutions area (ASB International, Global Banking Partnerships and Working Capital Services), Economics, Credit Risk and an Operations team.
What will I do on the ASB Institutional programme?
During the programme, you'll undertake five rotations in different parts of the business. This ensures you will have a diverse experience and are able to create synergies between your placements. There is the opportunity to be involved with our Relationship Managers at the client face, understanding the needs of our clients and the products we offer. You’ll also develop an understanding of risk management as potential deals are put through the credit approval process. In addition, you’ll experience the roles of both the front office trading and dealing teams, as well as an overview of our specialist product areas.
