You’ll get there through the real work and opportunities we’ll expose you to and support you to excel at. During your two-to-three year graduate program, you’ll be rotated every 12-18 months across different projects, roles and possibly locations around Australia which could include Newcastle, Sydney, Brisbane, Whyalla or Melbourne. 

You’ll be supported by your manager and team as you take on real responsibility and contribute to process and product improvement, product engineering, reliability and maintenance, manufacturing, systems control, safety and quality assurance. 

At the end of your grad program, your high performance and commitment will open up the potential of a supervisory role. 

Mining Engineering

Join our mining business and you’ll be joining a business which is growing and expanding its iron ore mining activities. This will give you some unique challenges to start your career with as we explore Greenfield mining opportunities and revisit dormant mining sites.

Your university experience will be taken to a new level as you’re supported by your manager and team and work on projects at our mine site in Whyalla, South Australia. You’ll be involved in operations, production mining engineering, long-term life of mine, facilities management, and planning and scheduling. 

Once you step off the grad program, there’ll be the chance of moving into a supervisory role.

Mechanical Engineering

When you join us as Mechanical Engineer, you won’t be held back by your grad job title. We don’t believe an extraordinary careers starts by being stuck behind a desk, so you’ll be out in the business getting stuck in. 

As we’re a materials and mining company, you’ll have a unique experience as you work on range of projects across our diverse industries. You’ll be dealing with senior stakeholders and taking ownership of influential projects which will develop your technical, project management and personal skills. 

During your two-to-three year program, you’ll be rotated every 12-18 months across different roles, projects and locations which include Newcastle, Sydney and Whyalla. Your rotations will give you experience in process and product improvement, product engineering, reliability and maintenance, manufacturing, design, safety and quality assurance. 

Through the entirety of your program, you’ll have the support and guidance to take your practical experience up a level and set you on the right path for when you step off the grad program. 

Chemical Engineering

As both a materials and mining company, the scope of what you can get involved in is broad. From involvement in research and development to auditing our energy management system there’s one thing that’s certain - you definitely won’t be bored. What you will be is supported by an experienced management team and part of a friendly peer group.

During your two-to-three-year grad program, you’ll be rotated every 12-18 months to work in different roles, either on the same project or across multiple projects in Australian locations that could include Whyalla, Sydney and Newcastle. 

At the end of your grad program, step into a supervisory role or become a senior individual contributor to our team, taking your talents to the next level.

Metallurgy

When we say it’s real responsibility with real outcomes, they’re not empty words. How about being able to influence and run parts of a project that results in more than $1 million of savings? The ability to contribute to projects like this is exactly what you can expect as a metallurgy graduate. 

You’ll be using your theoretical knowledge of extracting metals from ore to improve our processes, yield and quality. Coupled with your dedication to safety and flexible and proactive nature, you can expect extraordinary opportunities. 

During your three-year graduate program, you’ll be rotated every 12-18 months to work in different roles, either on the same project or across multiple nationwide projects, including Whyalla, Sydney and Newcastle.

At the end of your grad program, you can take your talents and commitment to the next level in a supervisory or senior role.

Our Grad Program

The 70/20/10 approach is a successful formula that's been proven to bring out the best in you. You'll learn-on-the-job, learn about our different business areas and receive structured learning to complement your skill set. It'll stretch you and your skills so you can reach your full potential, all whilst receiving support and guidance. 

Over the course of two-to-three years, you'll rotate through projects, roles and depending on your discipline, you'll move around Australia. Each rotation will give you plenty of time to get used to your Australian location and stuck into your role, so you get everything you can from the experience. 

Making the move to Australia offers exciting new adventures and unique experiences, but it’s also a big change. We've lots of practise in helping our grads move to begin their program or for a rotation within the program. You'll receive not only financial relocation assistance to make it easy for you, but also the help of our team so it won't be something you need to worry about.

Our grads have different backgrounds, personalities and skills, but what they all share is a commitment to achievement, a flexible approach, a drive for finding solutions and outcomes, and the ability to work well in a team.

Importantly, you'll need to have graduated from a recent university degree that is relevant to your application by January 2013.You'll also need less than two years’ full-time work experience.

There are seven steps you'll need to take in order to join us. These steps have been designed so that you get to know us during the process as well as we get to know you. After all, it’s important that you do well in our environment.

  • Participate in a phone interview
  • Complete individual and team exercises at our assessment centre
  • Attend a final interview with a OneSteel manager
  • Await reference and background checking
  • If you're successful, you'll receive an offer that is subject to pre-employment medical

Our graduate recruitment process runs from February through to June and if you're successful, we'll welcome you into our world sometime before the following February.
