Mark Brocklehurst
Degree: Bachelor of Engineering and Technology (Electrical Engineering), Diploma of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications, Massey University
Current Role: Embedded Software Engineer, Aviat Networks.
For many years I have enjoyed programming in a number of different languages, so when Aviat Networks advertised for a role which mixed my love for Software Engineering with my tertiary qualifications in Electrical Engineering I was sold!
From day one I was impressed with the work ethic, and intelligent people that worked at the organisation.
The company is very meticulous about the type of people they hire. I thought the interview process was very thorough. It will definitely give anyone truly passionate about software and engineering a good chance of a job.
The work at Aviat Networks is awesome
What I like most about working for Aviat Networks is every day there is something new to learn. The job I was hired for is writing code in C. I have only been here a few months but I have already been exposed to a whole range of technologies, programming languages, and operating systems, some which I had never even heard of.
Did I mention we do Research and Development here in New Zealand? Who wants to spend years in University learning to create and innovate, and then get a boring Government job?
The new material to learn is endless
If you are the type of person who is interested in hardware/software interactions then there is enough knowledge in this place to keep you interested for a few decades.
Want to learn how to build a network card? They design and build hardware in the downstairs laboratory.
Want to learn how to write an operating system, or a device driver? We write the embedded software on my floor.
Want to learn how to create a GUI which runs on a number of platforms to control hardware? They do that on my floor as well.
The work is not the only thing that makes Aviat Networks stand out
One word - "food".
The building has its own staffed café, and all the food is subsidised by the company. I get a massive plate of cooked food and a drink every day all for $5. A student's dream!
The building also has its own gym, and indoor soccer pitch. Not bad for an office with only 75 staff!
The company has an active social club, and we enter teams in various sporting events.
Advice for new graduates
Make sure you stand out - knowing how to write code is only half of the apple. The company likes people who are good communicators. This means you will be expected to be able to communicate technical ideas in plain English.
Obviously you have to at least know the basics of programming in C, but they will be more interested in your potential to learn programming (e.g. your attitude and personality).

Degree: Bachelor of Science (Computer Science, Electronics and Computer Systems) Bachelor of Commerce and Administration (Money and Finance), Victoria University of Wellington
Current Role: Software Engineer, Aviat Networks.
I was part of the Aviat Networks Summer Job program in 2007 when I was completing my 3rd year of my double degree. I absolutely loved working here and learned heaps from my collegues. The people at Aviat Networks have a strong team culture, but at the same time encourage personal development and innovation. The people here are friendly, really easy to get along with.
After I got my degrees, I decided to give commerce jobs a shot. Just because I haven't had much experience in that area and really had no idea what it was about. I also wanted to put my commerce degree to use so I became an auditor for a year. During that time I realised that I loved engineering jobs heaps more and I really missed working at Aviat Networks so I came back as a Software Engineer.
Working on cutting edge technologies all the time
What I love the most about working for Aviat Networks is waking up every day knowing there is something new to learn, something new to do.
You are constantly exposed to new ideas and technologies because we have a large customer base that will provide us with new challenges and problems to solve. To me, there is nothing better than knowing that you are working with cutting edge technology to solve problems for your customers and what you have to offer, whether that's your code or your ideas, it really makes a difference.
Lots to learn, lots to do
If you want to know anything and everything from hardware all the way to software, then this is the right place for you. We've got people who design and build circuit boards; we've got people who write operating systems, device drivers and hacking Linux kernels. If you don't like soldering iron or nasty C code, we also have people who create software to provide the best user experience possible for customers.
Work hard play hard
The company has its own staffed café, and all the food is subsidised by the company. For $5 you get lunch and a drink.
If you are into your sports, you are at the right place; every second person you talk to here will probably be a sports freak. We have our own onsite gym, an indoor football court, a video game room. Did I mention the social club also give out free swimming vouchers, subsidised yoga lessons and membership at the local squash club?
Advice for new graduates
Keep yourself busy - try to get yourself involved in projects. Build a website; try some new framework that you don't know about. Write a little application that shows you can identify problems and solve it your way. The company likes people who are driven and innovative. You will be expected to be able to communicate technical ideas in plain English. You will have to know the basics of programming, but they will be more interested in your potential and your personality.
