Carter Holt Harvey Packaging is one of Australasia's largest fibre packaging manufacturers with nearly 700 staff across New Zealand. We export to Australia, Asia, the Pacific and South America, and are responsible for the packaging of many exciting brands you see on supermarket shelves or at your local fast food outlet. CHH Packaging is a division of Carter Holt Harvey Ltd who employ 7,500 employees across the Carters, Woodproducts, Packaging Australia and Pulp and Paper businesses.

In New Zealand we have 6 manufacturing facilities, 4 sales and distribution offices and an in-house design team known as Montage Graphics.
Our Roles
Throughout the year we recruit graduates from the following disciplines:
Accounting
At CHH you will play a key role in influencing profit delivery and business growth.
As an accounting graduate you will be involved in producing monthly, quarterly and annual financial and management reports, balance sheet reviews, Capex and compliance reporting, stock control, budgets and assisting with audits. You will also be responsible for maintaining and developing systems and control procedures and will assist other departments with budgets and expenditure. CHH is an accredited ATO so you will be supported to complete your CA qualification.
Sales and Marketing
A role in our Sales team will enable you to develop your career in customer service, account management or business development leading to a career in sales management.
As a member of one of our site sales teams you will have exposure to account management, forecasting, margin management and managing relationships with key customers. Another key focus of this team is business development and acquisition of SME accounts to meet specific sales objectives and targets. A role in the sales team will see you working closely with other departments including design, finance and production to ensure the smooth transition from initial concept right through to delivery.
Mechanical and Electrical Engineering
With an engineering qualification you could join CHH as a Maintenance Engineer, Electrical Engineer or Maintenance Planner.
As part of the engineering team you will have exposure to ‘state of the art’ packaging machinery. You will be involved in managing, maintaining and upgrading machinery, working and coordinating with planning and production staff to achieve maintenance targets and reduce breakdowns.
To succeed as part of the engineering team you will have great problem solving and analytical skills and the ability to work efficiently as part of a team.
Design
Do you want to see your creations in the market place? Working as part of our design team you will be right in all the action designing new and innovative packaging, making structural improvements to our current range and creating samples. You will be instrumental in providing designs for the Company's large list of blue chip clients within the FMCG industry. You will have loads of energy, ingenuity, demonstrate initiative and most importantly be passionate about creating, designing and delivering exceptional products.
Human Resources
Working in HR provides a great opportunity to work within the Packaging NZ Head Office team and gain some great business and industrial relations experience.
As a graduate within the HR team, you will have an opportunity to get involved in all aspects of HR activities including preparing employment agreements, assisting with recruitment, championing our online HR and Recruitment system, analysing monthly statistics, training administration and providing exceptional administrative support to the team.
Supply Chain and Logistics
The Supply Chain function is an integral part of our business and is essentially responsible for receiving in raw materials and ensuring that orders are delivered in full on time to the correct customer. Working as part of the supply chain team you will be exposed to forecasting, transport and logistics, warehouse coordination, stock control and quality checking. To work in this area we seek candidates who demonstrate a high level of literacy and numerical skills. You will be able to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment and understand the importance of great customer service.

Corrugated
At our Case sites located in Auckland, Levin and Christchurch, we manufacture recyclable corrugated board which can be sold as flat sheets or further processed into printed corrugated cases. Corrugated cardboard provides a cushioning layer to protect products ranging from fruit and vegetables to meat and electronics.
Paper Bag
Our Paper Bag site based in Auckland specialises in multi-ply bags with high quality graphics. Our bags hold everything from sugar and milk powder through to concrete and chemicals. All the paper we use is recyclable, biodegradable and made from non-native wood stock.
Carton
If you have picked up 6 pack of your favourite soft drink lately or brought a burger from a major fast food chain, it is likely the packaging will have been made by our Carton site based in Auckland where we design and manufacture innovative high quality carton packaging for the beverage, fast food, seafood and FMCG industries.
Specialty Boards
At our Specialty Boards site in Hamilton we specialise in laminated boards, bulk bins, corner boards and small runs of custom made corrugated and solid fibre packaging. All our products are recyclable and re-pulpable and are made for a wide range of markets including meat, fish and horticulture.
Montage Graphics
Montage Graphics takes care of our complete end to end packaging pre-press and design requirements. Whether it is a line extension for
an existing product range or creating an exciting new brand image, the Montage Graphics creative team will deliver inspired design every time. Their range of services include, design, brand management and digital asset management.

What does your role involve on a day to day basis?
Scheduling and planning preventative maintenance work to be carried out on our machines and equipment, organising contractors and services. Planning large projects from A-Z. Researching and developing new technology to advance production equipment.
What skills do you need to undertake your role?
Good information management skills, excellent people skills and the ability to be part of a motivated team
What qualifications did you obtain prior to starting your role?
- Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Mechanical).
- AUT diploma in Production Engineering.
- National Diploma in Engineering.
What do you enjoy about your role?
Varity! My job is definitely not routine, everyday you are challenged with something new.

Maintenance Engineer, Specialty Boards
What does your role involve on a day to day basis?
- Maintain necessary production records and update information
- Generate QA work and complete as needed
- Make sure monthly maintenance and maintenance schedules are carried out on equipment
- Carry out required repairs to enable production to resume quickly
- Register any further work needed at a later suitable time
What skills do you need to undertake your role?
- Ability to do light machining
- Technical skills
- Fitting and Welding
- Ability to make fast decisions
- Ability to diagnose faults and compare with repair plans
- Safety awareness

Bachelor of Engineering (Honors) majoring in Engineering Science and Fluid Mechanics

HR Advisor, Packaging NZ
What sort of work do you do in your role?
Recruitment, psychometric profiling, performance management coaching and advice, attend disciplinary meetings, maintain the HR intranet, monthly reporting, payroll advice, coordinate the annual remuneration review, CEA interpretation, and providing general HR advice
What skills do you need to undertake your role?
Attention to detail, general reasoning, negotiating, understanding of NZ employment legislation and good communication skills.

Bachelor of Social Science, majoring in Human Resources and Industrial Relations
What do you enjoy about your role?
The people that I work with, and the varied nature of the role – you never know what your day is going to involve until it happens. Constant learning, being able to take responsibility and ownership of key tasks and being able to develop knowledge of manufacturing processes. As well as being able to work with a number of skilled and professional people.
