Launch your Career

We appreciate that everyone has different needs and no two people are the same; your goals and interests are wide and varied.

That’s why the opportunities we offer match this diversity; we don’t want people who look and sound the same. We know that you constantly strive to do better and get more out of life.

At Deloitte, you can pursue all these goals. Working with like-minded people you can try new things and discover just how far your abilities will take you.

Accounting & Advisory

Shari Carter (Partner) Christchurch

Speech BubbleWe work with SMEs that haven’t got sufficient in-house accounting staff so they rely on us to provide that accounting function and also business advice.

I think one of the main challenges is that we do provide a broad range of services to our clients and we also work with a broad range of business types and clients, so you have to have a skill base and knowledge that matches that. We find that the types of graduates that we recruit are generally pretty confident people who want to advance their careers and are very eager to grab whatever experiences and opportunities are in front of them. As a result of that eagerness they are able to develop that wide range of skills quite quickly.

The thing that sets Deloitte apart is the supportive environment that we’ve got. There’s always someone there to help you out and get you through it. You’ll find you’ll make a lot of friends here and I think that’s what makes it special.

Tax

Vina Hira (Partner) Hamilton

Diverse ExperienceEffective tax advisors need to gain a broad understanding of their clients’ businesses to be able to take a holistic approach to solving their problems – that’s why we’re looking for lateral thinking in our people.

I’m really impressed that the graduates entering our business have a broad range of interests, both personal and business, and they’re hungry. As a firm we’ve got some programmes in place now to stay in step with the new breed of graduates and to tap into their potential earlier.

I think what drives me to continue to be in this environment are the different interactions with people that you have across different industries. You never stand still, you’re always learning. Every day looks different and it presents different challenges, it opens up different doors to opportunities.

Tax is a very intellectually stimulating area to work in. It draws upon your creative skills, your ability to think laterally, and it’s people focused as well. If you’re looking for a thriving environment where you can be creative, challenged, and you can work with people in a team environment, then tax is really going to suit you.

Audit

Trevor Deed (Partner) Wellington Office

Empathetic Business Brains RequiredWith Audit there are two main challenges. The first is the technical analysis side, which is challenging in terms of keeping up because there’s just so much change. The second is to maintain the highest quality control and risk management practices.

Ours is a very people focused business and it’s one of the most highly visible groups of accountants in our firm. We’re always with clients. So you’ve got to have good communications skills, a personality, and a natural rapport. Secondly, you have to know how to learn because it’s technical and it’s risky.

We can open doors for them and give them opportunities to try different things. Just this week one of my interns said, “I really like Audit but I’d quite like to see what Corporate Finance is like.” So I made a phone call and two days later they’re sitting up in Corporate Finance doing financial transactions.

To successfully drive your Audit career takes a lot of self-awareness, confidence, and you’ve got to be pretty tough. It’s a high performance environment in a challenging technical area and sometimes you’ve got to be pretty resilient.

One of the things that I really like about Deloitte is its focus on managing and engaging people. We work bloody hard on our people focus, our engagement of our people, and career development for all of us, partners included.

Corporate Finance

Paul Callow (Partner) Wellington

One Stop Grad ShopIn our service line we’ve got three sorts of skill sets. One is valuation, which is value-based consulting and advisory.

Another is transaction services, which is really investigative accounting. And the third one is financial modelling. The people who do well in this service line tend to be good at financial modelling or get to grips with it.

The workflow can be quite lumpy so you get cracking on a job and it will basically be four or five weeks of relatively intense work and then onto the next one. So you get a hell of a lot of variety but you can’t really say what you’re going to be doing in six month’s time.

People who are adaptable really thrive here. The ones who are quite energetic and lively tend to do well. They bring that attitude to their work and they tend to be very successful as a result.

I think the thing I enjoy most about working at Deloitte is the people. I enjoy watching people come in as graduates, they grow and improve, and learn and create options for themselves.

Recovery - Now Hiring!

Viv Madsen-Ries (Associate Director) Auckland Office

Recovery is really just a more pleasant name for insolvency. When a company fails, we look at ways to return money to the creditors. It’s also investigating and identifying legal claims where someone has received money that they shouldn’t have received.

The role can be very commercial so you need to know a lot about how a business works and be able to identify where the value is. And if you’re running a business as a receiver until such time as you sell it, you need to be able to put it into a holding pattern and market it.

So you need a very, very broad set of skills but it mainly comes down to personality and some good old-fashioned common sense. An accounting degree is very valuable but a law degree or some sort of exposure to law is also very helpful.

It’s not everyone’s cup of tea but the primary skill is to be able to talk to all sorts of people from lawyers through to real estate agents and creditors and deal with a degree of conflict. You’re often seeing people at their worst so you need to be quite empathetic but able to stay focused. We collaborate quite a lot on how to do things and we’re able to play to people’s strengths. We give them as much responsibility as they can prove they can handle, which allows them to push themselves and not have to fit into a box.

We get the best work stories in Recovery. Lots of different things happen, quite strange things. And just when you think you’ve seen it all, something else happens.

Heath Deloitte Summer InternWork with the ‘backbone of the country’ – small to medium enterprises – to help them find ways to do better business while building diversity into your career.

Heath Henry (Summer Intern) Hamilton

I left school when I was 16 and became a mechanic for eight years. It’s not a bad job but it wasn’t going to take me where I want to be. So I decided to go to uni and do a Bachelor of Business Analysis.

I think Deloitte picked me on the basis of my interview. I reckon the fact that I had been out in the workplace and I wasn’t fresh out of school really helped. One of the guys that interviewed me used to drive a rubbish truck and he’s an associate director now so he could sort of relate to me.

My first day was very structured with people turning up on the dot, everything was very well set out, very professional, but in saying that it was a lot of fun as well. I was quite nervous actually, but they drilled into us that they expect us to know nothing and not to worry about it.

Everyone at Deloitte looks happy to be there and you can’t ask for more than that. People are really good. They’re willing to stop and take their time to explain, not just throw work at you.

I think everyone has a stereotype about accountants but I haven’t seen that stereotype anywhere at Deloitte. It’s just real diverse, everyone’s really colourful and happy.

Working at Deloitte has helped me grow – it’s amazing the opportunities for personal growth there are. If you’re willing to take on anything, if you’re willing to be part of the team as a whole, I think there’s a lot of potential to grow and move forward.

Audit

Amber Deloitte GraduateYes, it’s highly technical and demanding, but Audit also feeds your career with diverse experiences and gets you out of the office meeting with clients face-to-face.

Amber Cunningham (Summer Intern) Christchurch Office

Obviously I wanted to work in a Big Four firm so I went to all their presentations and Deloitte just came across so much better. I could really relate to the people that spoke. They all had interests outside of work, they all enjoyed the social side as well as working hard, and I thought, “Wow, I think I can fit in there.”

Audit is awesome in that we get to go out and meet CFOs and learn about different companies instead of just being stuck in the office. It means you have to have great communication skills. You have to be comfortable and confident talking to different people. And you’ve also got to like travelling and fitting into different environments.

My friends think auditing is nerdy but I think it’s the complete opposite because you’ve got to have personality, you’ve got to be able to communicate with people.

From Day One it got drilled into us: ask questions, we expect you to ask questions.

Another reason why I chose audit is because it’s so portable. I could go overseas and they’ll use the same programme that we use here.

And Deloitte’s so global that there are opportunities everywhere. If you want to work hard but you also want to socialise, Deloitte has that work/ life balance perfectly. At Deloitte people play to win but they also celebrate and have fun.

Tax

Matt Deloitte GraduateDon’t be fooled by the stereotypes – tax is one of the most intellectually stimulating, diverse, and creative service lines you can choose.

Matt Harris (Graduate) Dunedin

Deloitte has quite a fun culture structured around learning and just working hard. You can actually knock on the big boss’s door and say, “Hey I don’t understand this, please help me out.” He’ll generally drop whatever he’s doing and sort you out.

And they buddy you up with a few people who show you the ropes, see what you’re doing study-wise, and give you a bit of advice.

On my first day everyone was really friendly and welcomed us in, then we did some admin things for a couple of days, and then we got let loose. It was good. You’re chucked into it, but you’re helped along and they really make you feel like part of the team.

We got given client involvement right from the beginning. Especially in Dunedin, we’re not locked into boxes. You get to see a whole lot of things, a broad variety of work.

The opportunities at Deloitte are endless. They employ worldwide so you can do really well in your own service line or you can go overseas with the company. There is no limit to where you can go.

If you come into the job with an open mind, a willingness to learn, and prepared to work hard, the rewards are out there. Just have fun, get involved, and, yeah, just enjoy it. If you want to do well you’ll get recognised and they’ll show you the way to the top.

Corporate Finance

Genevieve Cooper Deloitte GraduateEnergetic, adaptable, problem-solvers who thrive on variety and really want to go places.

Genevieve Cooper (Graduate) Wellington

For me the things that really stand out about Deloitte are that it is innovative and offers lots of training opportunities. They facilitate your growth and career and make sure that you’re reaching your potential.

On my first day I was very nervous because it was my first job. But I remember the people being very friendly and welcoming and always willing to help. No question was too silly or whatever. So from the start they encouraged me to do well.

In my service line you have to be able to problem solve, thinking logically, and have good communication skills. The variety of work is good and the exposure to different clients. Another good thing is having access to the partners with their wealth of knowledge and just being able to tap into that – it’s just amazing. You feel like you’re benefiting so much.

When I first started I was put on a big due\ diligence project. It was with quite a big client so it was a good chance to get involved with a small team and learn a lot. It was good just being thrown in the deep end.

Within Deloitte definitely I would like to get to a management position but, in terms of the training opportunities, it’s unlimited how far you can go within Corporate Finance.

I think getting a job at Deloitte is an amazing opportunity. If you want to succeed and excel it’s up to you to really put it out there because your hard work will be rewarded.

Recovery

Eugene Deloitte GraduateIf you have some of the qualities of a detective, a managing director, and a lawyer, plus a strong streak of persistence, you’ll relish working in Recovery.

Eugene Souslov (Graduate) Auckland Office

Deloitte has a really good reputation for hard work but also great opportunities to learn. You come out of uni and you’re book smart but you’re not necessarily street smart. You have all the theory but then how do you apply it? In Recovery, we come in when a company has debts and it hasn’t paid them. So it’s placed in liquidation and we try to recover any money for creditors. And we also review everything like accounting records and bank statements to see where the money’s gone.

So it’s investigations like looking through bank statements to see if there’s any suspicious transactions. There’s also enforcements where we’ve identified somebody has misappropriated some funds so we will issue a demand letter. I think in Recovery the stereotype is that liquidators or receivers might be seen as a bit like grim reapers. But they’re not like that at all. The people in our group are very social and it’s a small team so everyone knows each other. And you can always talk to partners, managers, associate directors. I’m not scared to approach them. You need to be persistent because people don’t always tell you the whole story – especially if they have something to hide. So you have to be hard working and you need to be quite flexible to see the position people are in and use a bit of give and take.

We’re in the middle of all these people – we deal with the directors, we deal with banks, we deal with accountants and solicitors, so you also need really good interpersonal skills.
