Matt Smith
Matt Smith is a graduate in Assurance in our Wellington office. He joined the firm in 2008.
"I chose Ernst and Young because of the people and what they could offer me and my career. They promised, and have lived up to that promise, of helping me grow and learn, to maximise my potential.
Ernst & Young understands that fresh out of University we don't always know exactly what it is that we want to spend our life doing. So if later down the track we find that Tax is more the role we want to be in there is plenty of flexibility to move in the firm.
The work is so vast that I feel like I am learning the whole time. It's as if I have not left university yet I get paid to be here! Also I work with guys that I play golf with and socialise with so there is never a dull day.
My role in Assurance involves giving an opinion on the accuracy of financial statements of different entities. Therefore, given the size and type of client the work can differ hugely. Essentially we follow a process which will allow us to make an informed opinion, and we will have gained a thorough understanding of that entity.
You quickly realise talking to the staff whether or not Ernst & Young is the place for you. If you enjoy a good work life-balance and trying to excel in everything you do, then you will be with a lot of like-minded individuals.
I enjoy challenges and enjoy succeeding in areas that take me out of my comfort zone. I am of the opinion that you have to always do what's best for you and make sure you are the one driving your life/career, not your employer.
The school mentoring programme at Ernst & Young is really positive. We were given the chance this year to help mentor school students at low decile areas. I had a young Polynesian who was unsure of his next steps. I helped him realise the potential offerings of university and that a successful career was achievable if he could get to university, which he did."
David Liu
David Liu works in Assurance in Auckland. He joined the firm as a Graduate in 2008.
"Ernst and Young made the transition from university to working life very smooth indeed. The constant support and helpful attitude from the seniors all the way to the partners creates a vibrant and positive learning environment. This is the key to establishing effective teamwork, while encouraging personal development at the same time.
The comforting thing is to know that you always have the help of your friendly team members. To discuss issues with the client and later talk them through with your senior or partner is the kind of thing that builds up your communication skills and self-confidence. Out of work, colleagues become hang out buddies.
Being exposed to a diverse range of clients makes this job always interesting and fulfilling. From the mid-size retail firms to the large financial institutions, the sky is the limit when it comes to learning new things. On top of that, you will be meeting people from all walks of life and processing information from various systems.
Ernst and Young prides itself to be different in terms of the ‘people' perspective. I have to say they have driven this point right through. Right from the very first day of the interview process, I felt right at home in Ernst and Young.
The importance Ernst & Young places on its employees right through to its clients has become the foundation of its success. Now that is a firm you want to be working for!"
Kate Eckhoff
Wellington-based Kate Eckhoff is a Senior Consultant in Human Capital in Tax. She joined the firm in 2003, and spent three years in Brussels between 2005 and 2008.
The Human Capital culture is to be innovative in our thinking; dynamic in our action; passionate in our delivery; global in our approach and proud of diversity. Consequently my role requires continual learning and development so I can deal with new situations as well as focussing on delivering great service for our clients.
I felt incredibly proud after receiving my first promotion. Knowing that your hard work and dedication to the job has been recognised by some of the most senior members of the firm is a great feeling and it inspires you to do even better.
Ernst & Young offers great opportunities globally. When my fiancé was transferred to Brussels four years ago, I travelled with him and within a few days of arriving I had secured a job at Ernst & Young Brussels as a U.S. tax consultant. Since moving back to New Zealand in 2008 I have maintained many of the contacts I made in Brussels and continue to work with them on clients they have based in Australasia.
For two years I mentored a high school student who wanted to study law. It was incredibly rewarding watching her study skills and desire to learn develop after even just a few sessions together.
It's not all work here!
We work hard at Ernst & Young to create a friendly environment and have fun. Our offices have an active social club, regular get-togethers a variety of sports teams to join. There's something for everyone, ranging from movie nights, food fests, wine-tastings, a harbour cruise, the annual ball or trivia night (just for starters).
Our competitive edge....
The 2009 New Zealand Business Games was a huge hit with over 50 of our Wellington employeestaking part in a range of activities from go-karting, indoor netball, soccer, volleyball, touch rugby, ten pin bowling and corporate challenge events. Ernst & Young managed to scoop the top accounting award for the second year running.

In Auckland, the Ernst & Young Commerce Cougars beat stiff competition to take home the Sir Wilson Whineray trophy in the inaugural University of Auckland interfaculty rugby competition. Hot on the heels of that success, EY also won the inaugural Auckland Big 4 rugby tournament!
Our Christchurch office staff - never ones to shirk a challenge - put their all into the Cure Kids Great Adventure Race in the South Island each year. EY Christchurch also gets involved in the winter festival event programme, including venturing onto the ice-rink in the Square for some fun.
