Vanessa Lanegra, Humes Pipeline Systems
Current Role: Contract Sales Representative Civil, Humes Pipeline System
Degree: Bachelor Industrial Engineer, Universidad de Lima-Peru; MBA Adolfo Ibanez -Chile
Fletcher Building is a great place to work. I started my professional career with Fletcher Building in Peru when they decided to expand their operations in South America.
The learning process and the challenges were significant with huge growth expectations. Every day was different and the opportunities to keep on developing were considerable. I started in production and by the end I was managing a whole business unit with full P&L responsibility along with sales and manufacturing responsibilities.
I worked for Fletcher in Peru for 5 years and that presented me with the opportunity to come to New Zealand and keep on growing professionally. My next challenge was with Stresscrete, starting in the shop drawing team as a CAD draughtsperson, then as a Project Manager where I was responsible for managing the contracts, pricing variations and coordinating timelines. Essentially, I was the face of the company to our clients and I had to manage several projects at the same time, which required very good organising, negotiating, and administration skills. I worked for Stresscrete for 4 years delivering many successful projects.
Wanting to develop my career in sales, I moved to my present role as contract sales representative working for Humes, giving me the opportunity to further develop my sales capabilities. I am in contact with building companies offering precast products and with the network companies (Vector, WEL, Counties Power) making Humes presence stronger in the poles market.
Humes is a very organized and well established company, the support of all the team (technical, pricing, demand planning) allows you to give quick and effective response to the customer needs.
Wentao Zhang, Humes Pipeline Systems
Current Role: Civil Engineering Graduate
Degree: Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering, Masters of Engineering, University of Auckland.
Hi my name is Wentao Zhang, and I am a Civil engineer. At Humes I have been involved in all types of interesting work, I have been part software programmer, 3d modeller, mechanical engineer, researcher, environmental engineer and a scientists.
For example, I am currently building a software system that does automatic design, drawing and presentation of calculations of our products. The completion of this system would streamline the whole process from design to drawing with zero errors. Cool huh?
A brief history of how I got here. So when Bursary finished (that pre NCEA) examination, I was faced with the decision on what I am going to do with the rest of my life! I decided to go with Engineering because ever since I was a kid I have always had this habit of breaking things apart and putting them back together to study how it worked. So I figured, why not, let's go for it. I enjoyed my studies, in fact I enjoyed it so much, and I stayed on for another year to do my Masters. My Masters taught me how to research, how to gather information, how to see through clutter and make sound choices. It helped my work tremendously. I joined the Technical at Humes, because of the vast array of opportunities that was presented to me, and I never look back since.
Humes provide you the opportunity to pursue your interest and let you contribute to the company in your own way. So in conclusion, If you want to be challenged, and enjoy learning something new everyday, give us a call
Cherie Blake, Pacific Steel Group
Current Role: HR Consultant, Pacific Steel Group
Degree: Bachelor of Social Sciences majoring in Industrial relations and Human Resource Management, Waikato University.
In 2003 I took the plunge and decided to travel south of the Bombays to attend Waikato University. When I first enrolled I had no idea what I wanted to become, although I knew a management paper would probably be a good idea. My original major was Psychology as I had never heard of "Human Resources" (HR). In my second year I changed my major to Industrial Relations and HR Management after discussing career options with the University.
Following three years of study I was very fortunate to be offered a summer internship as an HR Assistant at Ecolab, Hamilton. This was only a short term position so I knew I had to start looking for something permanent. In the interim I was employed on a fixed term contract as part of Ecolab's customer services department, while searching for my dream job. A few months, and a holiday to Fiji later I was contacted by Madison Recruitment to see if I would be interested in re-locating to Auckland for an HR Administrator's role within the Fletcher Building Steel Group. At first the thought of working in a male dominated and heavy manufacturing environment was a bit daunting. As I look back now, it was probably the best career move I could have made.
After being introduced to all aspects of HR in my first year as an Administrator, I was then promoted to HR Advisor the following year and working solely for the Pacific Steel Group. My most recent promotion has been to HR Consultant. In these generalist roles I am the main point of contact for line managers and team leaders when they need to resolve an HR matter. My areas of responsibility have included recruitment, training and development, remuneration, employee relations, organisational change, safety, and providing policy/legislation advice.
During my years as part of the wider Fletcher Building group I have been supported by a very strong network of professionals who have assisted and guided me to where I am today. My career aspiration to lead and manage an HR team within 10 years is heavily embedded in my development plan which is reviewed on a quarterly basis. I am excited by the opportunities Fletcher Building and Pacific Steel Group have offered for me to achieve both organisational and personal growth.
