Micaela Ross

Micaela Ross FNZ GraduateAfter finishing high school I had a variety of jobs here in New Zealand and overseas, but in 2007 I decided to return to university to get a degree and change my career.  While studying at Victoria I discovered I really enjoyed the logical and creative sides of computer science and switched my major over from an arts’ degree to a bachelor of science.

Two and a half years later when I started with FNZ I had minimal IT experience.  However, there were a couple of things about FNZ which really helped me to bridge the gap between what I learnt at University and what I needed for the work environment.   The first reason was I was able to get help from an amazing team of developers who patiently answered my questions.  There is a fantastic collaborative approach in all the projects, where everyone has something to contribute and everyone is approachable.   One of the things I really like about FNZ is its flexible approach and lack of unnecessary bureaucracy.

The other main reason I was able to develop my skills quickly was FNZ constantly challenges its employees to go beyond their comfort level.  During my first six months I was flown to Sydney for over a month to work closely with our analysts there on a key project.   On my return to Wellington I became one of the lead developers in our production support team for the same project. This is a great example of how FNZ challenges their employees with new opportunities but at the same time rewards them for their commitment and achievements.  Above the financial rewards FNZ offers, there is also things like foosball, table tennis and post-it wars, but what I like the most about the company is the great team of people I get to work with.

Yong Li

Yong Li FNZ GraduateHi my name's Yong and I'm a software developer at FNZ. I graduated from the University of Canterbury with a degree in Engineering Mechatronics. In my spare time I enjoy playing guitar, playing basketball and catching up with mates.

Mechatronics is a multidisciplinary Engineering degree that encompasses the fields of Mechanical, Electrical and Computer Engineering. I had my first real taste of software development during my second year of uni, in an introductory course for C programming. I was immediately hooked. What fascinated me about software was its truly limitless potential. Unlike other engineering disciplines, you aren't limited by the physical constraints of the real world.

I joined FNZ in late 2009 as a graduate developer having no background in .NET or web development. What I lacked in experience, I made up for in effort and drive. FNZ gave me the opportunity to work in the field I wanted and also provided me the support and space to grow as a professional.

We value all rounders and at FNZ you won't find yourself holed up in a particular role or project, the environment is fast paced and always changing. Since joining I have worked in many areas of FNZ ranging from smaller enhancement projects, to supporting production systems, to implementing new solutions from the ground up. At FNZ you are given the opportunity to put your hand up and take charge. If you have the ability and the motivation you can move into positions that would otherwise take years to reach in other organisations.

Most recently I have been involved in the development of a very large scale online wealth platform (think online share trading). The system is built upon heavy enterprise integration and is designed for high volume use. I love the challenge and the reward of working on solutions that will be used by many users.

The word 'challenging' is a cliché and is thrown about when describing organisations. For FNZ the word holds true regarding the goals and targets that we set ourselves. But when all is done and dusted and a project is delivered we know how to celebrate. At FNZ we work hard, but when we party, we party the hardest.

FNZ is in equal parts challenging and rewarding. We don't have an overbearing company hierarchy; FNZ is an environment that encourages individuality and promotes innovation. I have the pleasure of working around an eclectic, talented and driven set of individuals in a young but constantly growing, successful company.

Sam Wang

Sam Wang FNZ GraduateI graduated from Victoria University of Wellington majoring in Comp-Sci, Statistics and Operations Research, and joined FNZ straight out of university. Since I have been working at FNZ, I have worked on a few projects, most noticeably the Public Trust Next Generation Platform rollout and a large-scale Direct to Customer (D2C) investment platform for a large Australian bank. On the Public Trust Next Generation Platform project I worked with the business team and clients to understand clients' business model, various tax laws, and designed and implemented a system to cater for their core business needs for a financial portfolio with income beneficiaries. The D2C project is a technically challenging mammoth. I have been exposed to various new technologies such as .NET4, Entity Framework, WCF and Liferay 6 Portal.

There are many reasons why I would recommend FNZ to graduates. Firstly at FNZ, you are not treated as "babies", no one will make you "go do some testing" just because you are a graduate. Graduates are given the opportunity and guidance to develop their technical, business and even management skills. Secondly, you are around graduates of similar age/interest who can understand what "It's over 9000" means. Last but not least, we have foosball and table tennis tables to play casually for fun, improve your skills or even compete in company internal leagues/competitions.
