There are numerous opportunities for graduate accounting jobs throughout New Zealand. Accounting firms, banks, government departments and a large number of corporate organisations all hire accounting graduates.

The four largest accounting firms in New Zealand, Deloitte, Ernst & Young (EY), KPMG and PricewaterouseCoopers (PwC) all offer graduate positions that present the perfect environment in which to begin your career. The main accounting areas within these firms are auditing, tax and business advisory.

Multinational corporate firms in the main centres of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, as well as in the more regional areas, have a need for accounting graduates in their accounting and finance teams. Working at a corporate also provides the potential to gain some exposure to other areas of business such as sales or marketing.

Working at one of the big 4 or mid tier accounting firms will provided you with significantly different work experience when compared to a corporate or smaller regional practise but all will provide graduates with a great grounding in accounting and support you through your chartered accountancy.

The big 4 accounting firms offer great opportunities for those accounting graduates who are looking to be very specialised in their field. There is not a lot of cross over work between audit, tax and advisory, but when you work in one of these business lines at a big 4 you will receive exceptional training and work experience. The audit and tax departments of the big 4 have a client base that is made up in the main of the large corporates in New Zealand, while the advisory business units completes work for a wide variety of clients.

Working at a mid-tier or small or regional accounting firm will provide the graduate with an experience that is similar but also very different to working at one of the big 4. At these smaller firms graduates will often get a lot more face time with clients, enabling them to work on their inter-personal skills. Graduates will also have the opportunity to take on their own individual pieces of work and perform tasks a lot more autonomously than at one of the big 4.

Overall there are numerous different graduate accounting jobs out there, at a wide range of different firms and businesses. Each one offers you a different graduate experience but all provide you with a great skill base and a path to a successful career.
