Audit
Do you love a fast-paced environment? All companies need audit services and that means our specialists are never short of exciting projects. So what exactly does our Audit team do? Essentially we give our view on whether a client’s accounts are a ‘true and fair’ reflection.
To get this right, the team needs to grasp a thorough understanding of a client’s business. While the year-end audit is when most of the financials are completed, the Audit team is always building relationships with clients and offering sound business advice.
Over time, you will also provide a range of other services to clients, such as:
- due diligence reviews
- initial public offerings
- financial valuations
- expert opinions on technical matters.
Although you may choose a line of business at the start of your career, you will work with a wide range of companies.
You'll love Audit if:
- you're skilled at interpreting figures
- you enjoy learning about different clients and industries
- you're good at problem solving.

Tax
Do you thrive on variety and challenge? As a Tax professional with KPMG, you will be joining a team that plays a vital role and adds value by helping clients address business critical issues. From interpreting legislation to long term planning and minimisation strategies, you will work collaboratively with clients and colleagues to think beyond the present and outside the square.
During your first year you will experience a wide range of both consulting and compliance work. As Tax is a challenging and integral area of the commercial environment, you can expect to be liaising on a regular basis with both the IRD and our clients.
You’ll be looking for every opportunity to add value through tax strategies tailored to your clients’ needs. In a short space of time you could be:
- reviewing a tax return prepared by a client
- researching a foreign tax credit issue
- helping a Tax team considering a proposed business restructure
- assisting an Audit team at a client's premises.
You'll love Tax if:
- you have strong technical skills
- you have the ability to think laterallyto give clients a competitive edge
- you have good communication skills.

John Bedford
Moving from the student lifestyle of Dunedin to the corporate world was a daunting prospect for John Bedford, but his first year at KPMG has felt like an extension of the university experience.
"The graduate programme at KPMG offers an environment where every day you learn something new and provides you with a challenge, and working with other grads that are in the same position as you makes the transition a lot of fun".
The graduate induction camp was an amazing experience to start our time with KPMG, and it really instils the KPMG values straight away by focusing on working effectively in teams and putting you outside of your comfort zone. This camp made everyone feel like part of the team from the outset, and showed us that KPMG are passionate about developing the most important resource; their people."

Anna Cahill & Ngatai Schuster
After joining KPMG in March 2008, Anna Cahill has recently completed PCE2 and is now just a month away from becoming CA. "I have enjoyed the ability to specialise in areas of interest such as farm accounting and have become a Xero expert and help clients around the North Island."
"I chose KPMG for the national and international opportunities. I am really enjoying the great team environment with lots of events and social occasions like playing social indoor netball with the KPMG team."
Ngatai Schuster also enjoys the open and supportive environment KPMG offers and is really happy with her choice of firm and career.
"I was made to feel part of the team straight away and my training was made much easier by everyone's willingness to help whenever I needed it. One of the best things about KPMG is having access to and learning from some highly experienced people with expertise across all areas of accounting."
"It's been fun getting to know all the different people I work with and there are plenty of good social events throughout the year to get involved in. And the great thing about Business Advisory is I work with a huge range of clients from small ‘mum and dad' type businesses to large groups across many different industries."

Carla O'Donnell
After studying for 5 years at Otago University and coming out with a LLB and Bcom majoring in accounting, Carla O'Donnell was looking forward to putting all the theory into practice. Now a year into her KPMG career, Carla has some good advice for budding Tax graduates.
"The grad induction week is a great way to bond with the other grads and learn what KPMG is all about and the buddy system makes your transitition from study to work a lot smoother as you have a friend to approach with all your questions. The tax training is comprehensive and constant. Each week consultants have a one hour training session, covering all aspects of tax practice in NZ. This provides a safe learning environment and an option to discover what areas of tax you could be passionate about.
"You get to do a range of tax work for a range of managers. This provides a great opportunity to test the waters in many areas without having to choose a specialisation right away. KPMG support you during your law professional studies which will be undertaken in your first year. You are granted one day off a week to complete your studies and time off to attend the onsite weeks. This is crucial to managing your study and work commitments."
