The International Management TraineeMeltwater Group

New Business Development

Our Business Development department is responsible for acquiring new business relationships for Meltwater, and is central to our global expansion.

The Role

In the first three to nine months trainees will learn how to present and sell Meltwater News services to executives across all industries. This training program is designed to prepare each trainee for a career in management, and successful completion is required before a trainee can be considered for a management position.

After having delivered successful results, a trainee will be given the opportunity to assume responsibility for a team of their own as a Sales Manager. Once this position has been mastered, Meltwater will offer its top managers the opportunity to run a business unit as a Managing Director. This opportunity can take place anywhere in the world, giving the Director the chance to move internationally depending on their experience and preference.

In New Business, you will be on the front line, learning what fuels a company, how to successfully negotiate with top level executives and CEOs across all industries, and how to develop your own client portfolio.

Meltwater GroupOur Client Relations department focuses on maintaining and developing the accounts of our 650+ clients in Australia and New Zealand.

Meltwater News has seen rapid expansion in Australia and New Zealand over the past 3 years. To complement this fantastic period of growth we are offering the opportunity for a handful of exceptional individuals to join our growing Client Relations team.

The Role

In CR, you will find yourself as the main point of contact for a large number of existing clients. You will actively create positive relationships with them through meeting with them and maintaining regular contact, and through focusing on developing the accounts and increasing the value of our service. Your business acumen and skills will be developed through negotiating contracts and long term subscriptions with top level executives and CEOs.

Sales is still a focus of the Client Relations role as you increase revenue through negotiating contract renewals and maintaining our long term relationships with clients, and finding new ways they can use the Meltwater system.

Contact with other Client Relations Departments throughout the region is regular, and once you have mastered the methodology of Client Relations, you may get the chance to manage your own team as the Client Relations department expands. As in New Business, our Client Relations department is in need of more managers, and there may be the opportunity for international travel.

As a Client Relations Consultant you will be an Ambassador of Meltwater, representing and promoting the company to our clients.

Why did you apply for a role with Meltwater?

I applied for several jobs after graduating from university and eventually was offered two very different ones: the first as an International Management Trainee with Meltwater in Auckland, and the second as an Account Executive at prominent Australia-New Zealand advertising agency, who worked with clients such as JobStreet. I had never heard of Meltwater News before, or knew much about sales beyond the stigma that most people perceive it to be.

However, I chose to start my career with Meltwater as I personally wanted to learn more about corporate sales and management. Meltwater's International Management Trainee Programme caught my attention as it promised the opportunity to experience doing business on an international scale, opportunities to travel, and focus on developing myself as a professional to cultivate soft skills in becoming a manager. This was what I was looking for.

I started off my initial 2 months of training in Sydney, and then moved back to Auckland to launch the office there. Since my humble beginnings in Auckland, I have also worked in Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia and earned the privilege to step up and become a manager.

What does a typical day include?

There are so many things to do every day to that keeps me busy; it's up to me as an individual to decide how to structure my day towards positive results, personal success and contribution to the company.

I prospect for companies and organizations that I feel would value the need for online media intelligence; most companies need such information as knowledge is key. I would then proactively introduce myself and Meltwater to the respective Manager/Head of Division or CEO and from there on, consult with my prospective clients (via phone/teleconference, face to face meetings) to really understand the needs of the company, and fit ourselves so that we're aligned with their strategic direction, until we come to a close.

Apart from the sales aspect, I also discuss key accounts with the employees I manage, ensuring they are on the right path towards achieving their goals and helping to develop them so that they too can step up towards management at an accelerated rate.

What do you enjoy about working for Meltwater?

I love coming into to work every day and feeling like my colleagues are also my mates. I have built amazing relationships with so many amazing people in Meltwater across different countries. A few have even become my closest friends. It's a fresh, young and dynamic company, where you can surround yourself with that fun and positive energy. Who wouldn't want to work in a company that cultivates that kind of corporate culture?

I have also learned a lot about myself with regards to my strengths and weaknesses and pride myself in developing as a professional. One of the significant developments I have enjoyed is learning how to become more consultative and thinking more strategically. As I look back, I feel that in the last 18 months, I have come a long way and I'm looking forward to more challenges to improve myself.

Where are you now

Since being part of the start up team in Auckland, I have had the opportunity to move to Hong Kong and develop the office there. I had learned to do business in Asia, across different markets such as Hong Kong, China, Macau, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia and definitely put some of my Cantonese and Malay to practice.

In 2010 I was fortunate enough to be given an opportunity to join the management team and launch our first office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which is also where I was born. It's an amazing experience, where I feel like an entrepreneur and am actually building a business from scratch on the ground in Malaysia. We officially launched our office on 1st September 2010 with 6 people in our team. We are looking to host another recruitment session in November and have a new team of people join us in January 2011 to be a part of growing our office. There are an enormous amount of opportunities for further expansion, as we look forward to having more Meltwater divisions join us in the South-East Asian market.
