Jennifer Ho

Jennifer Ho PwC GraduateI chose PwC as the graduate programme is very structured. So, right from the very start I knew I’d get top-notch formal training and on-the-job experience to build the foundation for my career.

Plus, as PwC is part of a vast international network, I realised there’d be endless opportunities.

The recruitment process was very reassuring and enjoyable. I liked all stages, especially the ‘meet-and-greet’ evening, where I learnt even more about PwC and met the people I’d be working with. On my first day in the office I was assigned a buddy, who helped me with all my questions from technical to daily operational aspects; this was great support for a new comer.

I’m currently working in Private Client Services (PCS). This business area seemed a great fit for me. Armed with a BCom (Hons)/LLB degree, I was keen for a graduate role that would give me a wide variety of experience. PCS definitely gives me this diversity. I get to advise private entities; where I learn client issues first hand from the owner/operator. Then I get to see the beneficial impacts materialise, almost immediately.

So far, the most exciting project I’ve worked on is a business restructure. Based at the client’s premises, I was involved in thinking about our client’s current group structure, business affairs and their future plans. Working with our in-house tax and legal experts, I helped recommend the most favourable business structure to achieve the greatest potential benefits for the client. I enjoy projects the most where I’m able to get client interaction.

What’s really great about working here is the training and support. There’s the formal tuition, where you sit in a room with 10-20 people and learn about a relevant subject, like tax or accounting (a bit like a tutorial at university). These sessions are good because you’re encouraged to contribute knowledge, experience and viewpoints. The other training is on-the-job, through all the client projects you work on.

I also love the PwC culture. The people here are willing to listen to you and readily offer their help. I really feel that I can voice my point of view; I’m always assured it will be valued and will have an impact on the final outcome. Another good thing about the culture here, is how PwC is always considerate about your commitments outside work.

Part of the culture is the team sprit generated through our annual community projects. The most recent project we completed was a volunteer tree planting exercise on Motuihe Island. This was a great chance to get out there, have fun and contribute to the natural environment.

Jeremy Dobbie

Jeremy Dobbie PwC GraduateI chose to work here because of the strong emphasis on a work-life balance, the people I’d met and the career opportunities available.

I’m a big believer of ‘work hard, play hard’ and I felt that PwC believed in this too. Applying for a summer internship with PwC is fun. What I enjoyed most was sitting the tests (IQ, EQ), these aren’t your typical university exams. I also enjoyed attending the ‘meet and greet’, where I got to see what PwC was all about. The fancy PwC lobby and guest speaker, Sarah Ulmer, definitely set the bar high.

I was fortunate enough to enjoy two summers at PwC, giving me the chance to taste-test what business area I wanted to work in. I chose Tax, a good median point between my conjoint degree of law and commerce, plus it complemented what I’d learnt and enjoyed studying at university.

My journey with PwC has been awesome so far. The packed social calendar, from team lunches to tax sports days, and discos to Christmas parties; have provided some good times and food. The numerous sports teams and annual sporting derbies have also offered some friendly, yet competitive fun, and been a great way to hang out with workmates outside of work, and meet new people.

My typical day sounds like this: Arrive at work around 8.30 to check emails and the latest news. Get a message on Sametime (our instant messaging programme) from a colleague to grab a coffee. Back to work where I tackle various tax compliance and consulting work; discussing with clients in the flash meeting rooms, or talking on the phone to IRD agents. Lunch beckons at 1230pm, the option is to eat in the kitchen with my packed lunch, head to food alley with some of the other grads, or sit on the Viaduct steps for some food and vitamin D. Spend the afternoon skim-reading the Income Tax Act, or number crunching work papers to churn out the ultimate tax return.

As graduates, we get heaps of training and development to help us upskill and create a better awareness of tax issues. In our first year, there were fortnightly training sessions. These useful sessions help you slowly build your tax knowledge, yet they’re pretty chilled with lots of case studies and quizzes, and bribes of candy. We also get annual tax technical training. Plus there’s the annual tax conference, where all PwC tax staff congregate in Auckland for some expert knowledge sharing and learning.

Since starting here, I’ve been involved in a couple of community projects. During my summer internship, we had the chance to give back to our local community by taking time off work to help out at Auckland City Mission in the lead up to Christmas. In my first few weeks as a graduate, I organised a team volunteer day, getting our hands dirty and giving back to nature with weeding and tree planting on Motuihe Island – and the chance for a picnic and some touch rugby too!
