Telecom will make sure you get the right practical experience to qualify as a Chartered Accountant. We're an Approved Training Organisation (ATO) and committed to providing graduates the opportunities necessary to get into the College of Chartered Accountants.
We do this by providing the necessary training, support and coaching to successfully complete and pass the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants (NZICA) requirements (Foundations, PAS and PCE2). Once you're qualified, you'll be offered a position within Telecom.

Six training areas
Telecom offers six of the seven training areas set out by the NZICA:
- Accounting information systems
- Auditing
- External reporting
- Financial management
- Management accounting
- Taxation
Over three years we'll rotate you through a series of roles to make sure you get a depth of experience in one area, and a broad range of experience in two other areas.
Diverse roles for graduates
There is incredible diversity across the accounting roles offered at Telecom. Our 2010 graduates are working across five different business units - Retail, Gen-i, Wholesale, TT&SS and Corporate - in a variety of financial and management accounting roles. They're supporting the mobile business, client delivery and professional service areas, IT and operations areas, revenue assurance, corporate finance and financial control of the business units.
Key elements of the programme:
- Managed role rotations and opportunities to fulfil professional development requirements
- Allocation of an NZICA-approved mentor
- Regular structured training and development sessions throughout the duration of the programme

Telecom is one of our largest corporate Approved Training Organisations (ATO) employing more than 100 of NZICA's members. So, if you do choose to join Telecom as a University graduate, you'll be in good company!

"The ATO system ensures that practical experience is planned, supervised, relevant and gained in a quality environment with high ethical and professional standards. Ebrahim Sacha
Degree: Bachelor of commerce - Finance and Accounting, University of Auckland
Current role: Graduate Accountant, Retail
I chose to apply for the Telecom Accounting Graduate program as I thought it would be a good fit with my Accounting studies at University and my interest in technology. Coupled with the fact that Telecom is one of the largest companies in New Zealand, I did not think twice about joining this dynamic and exciting environment.
I am currently based in the Retail Mobile division of the company, one of the many roles I will be working in as part of the Graduate program. My current position involves analysing data on the mobile business and report my findings to my manager.
Going straight from University to a job may make you nervous, however there is a lot of support as I have been assigned a buddy, who was in the same position as me within the last few years, and also a mentor who guides you on things such as NZICA qualifications.
The great thing about the Telecom Graduate program is that we rotate each year into new roles, which allows us to broaden our competencies and view the business from another angle. This means you are bound to find a role in Telecom that suits you as there are always opportunities within the business.
If you really want a broad career with limitless opportunities
to reach your full potential, taking the Telecom Graduate position
is the way to go. Join Telecom and work to make a difference.

Degree: B.Com (Accounting and Finance), Bachelor of Commerce (Hons) in Accounting, University of Auckland.
Current Role: Graduate Accountant, Retail
So far, I have not had the chance to do any real work as our graduate group have only just started. But my manager has briefly explained to me about my role within the team. I will be helping out with month end reconciliations and also with Internal Trade. Internal Trade involves allocating Costs and Revenues to each of the Business Units within Retail (Home, Office and Mobile); making sure that the methodology used for allocation reflects the true values, among other things.
What I have found surprising in my first 2 days is the amount of contact you have with not only the people within your own team, but also within other departments. It seems like everyone knows everyone else. Another thing is that your manager sits right beside you using the same equipment you are using, making them very approachable. Also, my colleagues have been very nice to me by explaining and showing me how to do things. On my first day, I didn't know how to set up my computer, so one of my colleagues just helped me out without even having to ask him.
The buddy system within Telecom has been really fantastic. My buddy, Cathy Zhang has been fantastic. She helped me sort out few things with setting up such as help with the Operational Separation Training. It definitely would have been tougher without her here to help me.
I chose to work at Telecom over any other company because of the variety of experience offered by Telecom. I will get the opportunity to do Management as well as Financial Accounting as well as get the opportunity to move offices and get a feel for Telecom as a whole rather than knowing just a part of it. To cap it all, the lifestyle here is just awesome.
When we started here, we had a week long Induction to Telecom. It was full of useful information, some of which did go out the other ear but the Induction week was just fantastic. We were treated as if we are valued and are special.
Who doesn't want to work for a company that treats its
employees like humans???
I am really looking forward to getting into some real work and
although it is about a year away, the rotations as well.
